Update old GOLD units

GOLD air handling units are of exceptional quality and are built to last. By replacing selected components and installing new controls, the product gets a prolonged service life and becomes even smarter.

This makes the GOLD Refurb Kit qualified to wear the symbol for our RE:3 concept. Extending the lifespan of products, by making component updates on site and adding modern functionality goes under the RE:vitalise category of the concept.

It's the inside that counts

Swegon offers a spare part solution that updates older GOLD units to today's controls and functionality. Also, the complete fan inserts can be changed to modern fans with EC motors. This extends the service life of the unit, while minimising the environmental impact.

The update is offered as a refurb kit and is managed on-site. The installation is quick and only marginally disrupts day-to-day operations, avoiding major interventions in the building.

Suitable for GOLD air handling units delivered between 1996 - 2005:

  • GOLD version 3/4 size 4 and 5 (1996-2001)
  • GOLD version A, size 11-32 (2001-2002)
  • GOLD version B, size 11-52 (2002-2005)

Sustainable and user-friendly

Benefits include:

  • Longer service life and secured availability of spare parts
  • Extended functionality and BMS communication, enabling future upgrades, connectivity to the cloud and access to digital services
  • New, easy to use interface
  • Improved energy efficiency of the fans
  • Lower investment cost, compared to changing the entire AHU
  • Quick installation, avoiding major interventions in the building
  • Reduced environmental impact, supporting sustainability targets and CO2 budgets

Refurbish or replace?

A quick comparison between buying a new air handling unit and updating the old GOLD unit with new controls and fans.

Embodied CO2: Refurbishment saves 75% of embodied carbon compared to a new unit. That CO2 saving compares to:

  •    10 years running time of the fans in a GOLD unit
  •    17 laps around the world with an electric car

Investment cost: The cost is around a third compared to installing a new unit, you avoid expenses for additional work, ducting, piping etc.

Operational cost: As old GOLD units already have rotors with high temperature efficiency, replacing the fans improves energy efficiency so the operational cost is comparable to that of a new unit.

*This example uses a GOLD RX 012 running 24/7 at 0,9 m3/s in Sweden.

How is it done?

The Refurb kit consists of a set of components needed to update the controls. A Swegon technician or other representative inspects the air handling unit on-site and determines if/what refurbishment is appropriate. The technician then carries out installation and commissioning.

The job is quick, does not interfere with daily operations and does not require major interventions in the building.

RE:vitalise - extending the product's service life

RE:vitalise is one of the three pillars within the RE:3 framework. RE:vitalise means that products get an extended lifespan, by making component updates on site and adding modern functionality to the products.

Through easy replacement of key components and by the means of software updates, the GOLD unit is given a prolonged service life and is actually smarter than it was initially intended to be.

This makes the GOLD Refurb Kit qualified to wear the symbol for our RE:3 concept.
